New Year, new you? Or how about new year, BETTER you? But how? At the start of a new year it’s common practice to set New Year resolutions, but here at Freya we like setting goals instead. Here’s why…
Resolutions:
Resolutions are often broader, overarching statements about changes we want to make in our lives.
They’re more abstract and focus on the desired outcome rather than specific steps to achieve them.
They lack specific details about how the resolution will be achieved.
For example: “Get back in the gym.” “I will be more productive.”
Goals:
Goals are more specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART).
They involve breaking down larger aspirations into concrete, actionable steps.
Goals are set with a practical mindset, emphasizing the actionable steps required to achieve a desired outcome. They involve planning and strategizing.
For example: SMART goal for running a marathon
Specific: I’d like to start training every day to run a marathon.
Measurable: I will use my apple watch to track my progress as I increase my mileage.
Attainable: I’ve already run a half-marathon this year and have a solid baseline fitness level.
Relevant: I value my health and wellness, and this fitness goal will help me sustain that.
Time-bound: The marathon is in June of next year, so I must be ready by then.
On top of that, did you know that when you set goals and follow through with them you begin to build a sense of reliability and trust in yourself. Keeping these promises to yourself will contribute to an increase in your self confidence. Before we get back to our normal, crazy everyday routines try to find a pocket of quiet time, grab a paper and pen and set some goals for yourself for the new year. Let’s commit, strive towards healthier, stronger versions of ourselves, and build up our confidence and self love!
